UNIX Information

Most of this information applies to our Linux system, but much of it would also work on other Unix systems, perhaps with a few small changes.

Basic UNIX Information
- How to Access the Unix (and Windows) Server

  - cleanup
    Removes backup files.
  - count
    Illustrates a simple loop.
  - ff
    A file finder.
  - fix
    Changes all subdirectories to be private.
  - fixemacs
    Copies a needed .emacs file to all user accounts.
  - ll
    Script to give a convenient long listing of files.
  - mailfile
    Script to mail a file to another user on the same system.
  - makex
    Gives execute permission to a file.
  - param
    Displays info about command-line parameters.
  - private
    Makes a file private.
  - public
    Makes a file public.
  - removex
    Removes execute permission from a file.
  - senddc
    Emails a file to Br. David.
  - showpath
    Shows the directories in the current path.
  - vartest
    Shows how to test for an empty string.
- Intermediate-level Bourne shell scripts:
  - msize
    Shows the size of someone's mail queue.
  - removedumps
    Removes core dumps.
- More advanced Bourne shell scripts:
  - findall
    Does a recursive listing of files. Uses a recursive function.
  - findfirst
    Find the first instance of a filename.
  - findfirst.onedir
    Helping script used by the previous script. This script calls itself recursively.
  - findfirst2
    Another script to find the first instance of a filename. This script uses a recursive function.

- Bourne shell scripts useful in system administration:
  - archive
    A script used to archive user files under HP-UX.
  - checkexpired
    Reports on all users with expired passwords.
  - checkexpiry
    Reports on expiration date of all users' passwords.
  - checklocked
    Reports on all users with locked accounts.
  - checknet
    Checks network status and related items.
  - datecmp.c
    C program used by several of these scripts
  - findstring
    Finds a string in files in this directory and all directories in subtree under this.
  - fixexpire
    Changes the password expiration date for all users.
  - gethw
    Copies student homework files and adjusts permissions.
  - lock
    Locks a group of user accounts.
  - logmeout
    Script to shut down extra login sessions (for HP-UX on acad1)
  - massmail
    Email the same message to a group of addresses.
  - publish
    Change permissions on Web pages to make them available.
  - test-cid
    Script formerly used under HP-UX to generate user IDs for new accounts.
  - unlock
    Unlocks a group of user accounts.
  - userdel
    Old script to delete a user account. Many Unix systems provide a userdel or deluser command or script.
