Amber's Story

Amber Back is currently a sophomore majoring in CS here at Saint Vincent College. Above we see her displaying her finished final project for Assembly Language: a maze video game. About this project, Amber says, "Although very difficult, this Assembler video game project was by far my favorite so far. The project itself was very difficult and time consuming, mostly due to the nature of the Assembly language that it had to be written in. I worked on it almost half a semester!" Despite the difficulties, Amber expressed a true sense of fulfillment from having completed this project. She said that after the coding and debugging were over, she was happy to actually have something fun to show her friends and family.

Interview with Amber

Q: Why did you choose to major in computer science and what advantages does this major have over other majors?

Amber:
I chose to major in computer science for two main reasons. In high school, I took every computer classes they offered, from simple typing and Microsoft Word classes to harder web design and C++ programming classes. I excelled in all of these classes, and one of my teachers recommended a career in computing. Secondly, I saw this major could lead to a very flexible career where I may have the opportunity to work from my home (more so than in other careers). This was important because eventually I would like to have children and this would make it easier to be home with them.

Q: Why is this a good major for girls to get into and why should more females be interested in computer science?

Amber:
This major is just as good for girls as it is for boys, if not better! Since there currently is a lack of women in the field, many employers may be looking for a woman to add to their team to men to give some more perspective on a project (we all know men and women think very differently!). There’s also the option of working from home and raising children.
