Installation Notes for Visual Studio .NET

Below you can find various information related to the installation of Visual Studio .NET, obtainable through the MSDNAA Software Loan Program. Information is provided both for students on campus who wish to install over the network, and for commuting students who have borrowed the CDs from Br. David.

It is suggested that you begin by reading Microsoft's system requirements for this product. However, as explained below, you can manage a minimal install that uses less hard drive space than specified by Microsoft.

Accessing Visual Studio .NET Through the On-campus Network:

  1. Log into the CISDEPT domain and follow these msdnaa share access instructions to access the \\cis-w2kserver\msdnaa share.
  2. From that share, simply open up the Vs7 folder, and from there open up the Vs folder.
  3. Within that folder, simply execute setup.exe and it will launch the setup program for Visual Studio .NET.
  4. Continue by following the instructions below as to what installation options can be unselected so as to save some hard disk space on your PC.

Visual Studio .NET Setup Options: (network and CD installations)

  1. Students that have borrowed the actual CDs from Br. David should begin here, by running setup.exe from Disc I.
  2. Once setup is started, you will have to run the Windows Component Update selection first. Simply choose that option and follow the onscreen instructions. Once that is finished, you will begin installing Visual Studio itself.
  3. After you start the Visual Studio Installation selection, you will be shown the license agreement and on the following window you will be allowed to pick the installation components.
  4. Possible Options for Component Selection:
    • It is recommended that no matter what items you choose to not install, you should definitely uncheck the following: Crystal Reports .NET, Server Components, and SQL Server Desktop Engine. These items are not needed for any CIS C++ coursework.
    • If you only want to install the C++ compiler, you can also uncheck both Visual Basic .NET and Visual C# .NET, found under Language Tools. (Be sure to leave Visual C++ .NET checked of course!) You can also uncheck the option for the .NET Framework SDK. This results in an install size of about 1.7 GB.
    • Finally, if you would rather not install the Documentation (help files), you can uncheck that item and the install size is then about 720 MB.
  5. Following the selection of the components to be installed, you can then start the file copying process.
