CISDEPT Residence Hall Access Instructions
Note: Missing Mapped Network Drives:
- A few students have remarked that while they are capable of logging onto the CISDEPT
Domain from their own PC, they do not get their mapped network drives in My Computer.
The reason for this is somewhat unclear, but stems from the fact that so many
different versions of Microsoft Windows are in use across campus.
- A possible way to fix this problem is to use the Run command (click Start, then Run) and enter
\\cis-w2k3server\netlogon.
- This should bring up an Explorer window containing logon scripts. Double click on the script
whose filename is of the form yourusername.vbs. This will execute your logon
script, which maps your network drives for you.
- Note that you can make a shortcut to this file and thus make it easier in the future to
reconnect to your CIS mapped network drives.
- An alternate solution to getting your mapped network drives is to log out and back in again.
|
Note: Local Device Name Already in Use:
- If you get this error message it means that a network drive is already present having the
same drive letter as one that your logon script is trying to set up for you.
- To fix this, go to My Computer and manually unmap each of the network drives that is
present for the CIS server. This can be done by right-clicking each
drive and selecting Disconnect from the popup menu.
- An alternate method is to go to a Command Prompt and unmap each drive as in this example:
net use m: /delete
Do this for each drive letter to unmap.
- After unmapping these drives, run the yourusername.vbs logon script as explained
in the note above. This should map the correct network drives for you.

Note: Errors When Attempting to Join the CISDEPT Domain:
- If, after performing the instructions below to add your PC to the CISDEPT domain,
you get an error saying that the domain cannot be found, one possible solution is to set your
primary DNS server to be our domain controller.
- The exact steps to set up what DNS to use
differ between versions of Microsoft Windows, but generally it can
be set by going to Control Panel and opening the Network settings.
- From the Network Settings (or equivalent) window, select the option for TCP/IP,
and from there select the option for DNS Servers.
- At the DNS Servers entry, for the primary server, enter in 10.25.1.7.
- Click OK at each window opened. You may be prompted to reboot for the settings to take
effect. After rebooting, attempt to add your PC to the domain using the instructions given below.
- You might also need to use cis2.stvincent.edu as the name of the domain
(instead of CISDEPT).
|
Using Windows XP:
- Note: If you are using Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you will be unable to make
your PC a member of a domain, and thus will not be able to connect to the CISDEPT domain.
This is because the Home Edition does not have the capability to connect to a domain.
Windows XP Professional does not have this problem.
- If you are already able to access the campus LAN and Internet you can
Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. (Information regarding the
campus LAN and Internet access can be obtained through
Information Services.)
- From here, click the Computer Name tab, and press the Change... button.
- In the Member Of section, select the Domain radio button, and enter CISDEPT.
- Now click OK and follow the instructions to reboot. If you are asked for an account name
and password, simply enter your CIS username and password. You should now have the CISDEPT
item in the Log On To: field in the Windows XP Logon dialog. Using your CIS
username/password you can log on to the server and access your mapped network drives.

- At this tab, press the Properties button.
- At this screen set your Computer Name to be res-YourLastName, where
YourLastName is replaced by your last name.
