Homework Submission Directions

This document describes how to submit your homework electronically, should your professor ask you to do so. The general idea is that each class has a folder that contains a subfolder for each student to use for homework submission. The student simply copies his/her homework files to the folder identified by his/her user ID. No other student has access to this folder.

From the CIS Lab

The easiest way to submit your homework is to use the CIS Lab itself. This has the added advantage that you then have the exact same compiler or other software that the professor is going to use in checking your work. Also, there is almost always a tutor on duty in the lab to assist you in your work. Do not hesitate to ask the tutor for assistance. Finally, your professor's office is right nearby in the same building in case you need further help.

Use either My Computer or Windows Explorer to copy your homework file(s) from their starting location to your homework folder for this class. For example, if you have a file called pg4.cpp on your M drive, find this file and click on it. Then use Edit, Copy. In the drop down list (downward triangle) look for your homework submission folder. For example, if you are in CS110-2 look for the one named Hw110-2. Double click on that folder to open it. Use Edit, Paste to copy your homework file to this location. Note that this Hw110-2 folder has been set up to automatically refer to your subfolder of the professor's homework folder for this course. That's part of what makes this method so easy.

Your professor can also add comments and grades to your file(s) that you have placed in your homework submission folder. If your professor does so, you can copy your homework file(s) from there or view them in place to see what has been added.

From Elsewhere

You may be able to set up your dorm PC to log into the CISDEPT domain. machine. At your network logon screen (which you would usually see when Use your user ID and password for the CIS department PCs. After loggin in you should get the same mapped network drives that you would see in the CIS lab, including the homework submission folder that you need. Follow the directions in the above section for copying your homework to this folder.

If you are unable to log into the CISDEPT domain, you can ftp your homework to the homework submission folder, but you will need to know how to use your ftp client software and you will need to know the location of your homework submission folder. That makes this method harder.

Use your FTP client software to connect to the CIS server at cis2.stvincent.edu. If your homework is a text file (with an extension such as .txt, .h., or .cpp) do an ascii, not a binary transfer of your homework file to the desired homework directory. If your homework is not a text file (with an extension such as .doc, .xls, etc.) do a binary (not ascii) transfer of your homework file to the desired homework directory. On the server, these homework directories are all located under /Homework. For example, if carlsond is in CS110-2, it would be /Homework/hw110-2/carlsond. Directions for Using FTP are available.
