Mentoring

For Students Interested in Information Technology, Computers

This page describes the email-based mentoring program that was provided by our 2000 - 2002 ITWD Link-to-Learn grant project. A new mentoring program is provided under our NSF scholarship grant project.

Email-based mentoring was provided to encourage students to consider an information technology or other computer-related career. By submitting information on a form (no longer available), the student could sign up to be matched with either a professional who worked in an information technology or computer-related field. This allowed the student to exchange email messages to ask questions about work in this field, the skills needed, career opportunities, etc. The hope was that the email mentor could provide the student with good information and encouragement. This mentoring program was intended for 8th through 12th grade students and college students interested in information technology. It was expected that the student had a possible interest in Saint Vincent College (or was already a Saint Vincent College student).

Guidelines:

  • Submitting the form (no longer available) sent the information via email to Br. David Carlson, project director and CIS department chairperson, who matched the student with a mentor. He sent both the student and the mentor an email message containing the email address of the other person as well as some suggestions on how to start the email conversation.
  • Students who were under 18 were encouraged to check with a parent before proceeding.
  • Students had to be at least 13 years old to participate.
  • Although care was been taken to select reputable people as mentors, students were encouraged not to give out contact information beyond email addresses.
  • Students were told to check with a parent and contact Br. David Carlson if a problem was encountered.
