Computing Day 2005

- Computing Day 2005 was held on Friday, February 25, 2005, from 8:30 to 10:30 am.
- About 50 to 55 students from area schools, grades 6 through 12, attended.
- This program was designed to introduce students to various areas of computing and to encourage
students to consider a possible career in this field.
- The program was as follows:
- The main talk was given by FBI Special Agent Karen Szczepanski
on the topic of Internet safety.
- A presentation entitled "So, You Wanted to be a Lion Tamer, Eh!?" by Tony Perla,
Director of Technology, Derry Area Schools, concerning the work that he does.
- Colleen Carr, Assistant Professor at Saint Vincent College, conducted a hands-on
session on exploring the world of programming.
- A demo by Br. David Carlson, Associate Professor and Chairperson, showed malicious
software that attackers might use against one's computer.
- Computing Day 2005 was presented by the
Computing & Information Science Department
at Saint Vincent College with the help of the
department's advisory board, the individuals mentioned above, and the Pittsburgh office
of the FBI.

During 2002 - 2006, Computing Day was organized in part as an outreach program in conjunction with
a scholarship program supported by the National Science Foundation's
Computer Science,
Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships program under grant DUE-0122934.
