Computer Camp for Girls



The Summer 2002 Camp


Our second computer mini-camp for girls was held on Monday, June 17, through Wednesday, June 19, of 2002.

Summer 2002 Camp Outline


  • Designed for girls entering grades 8 through 11
  • The camp included instruction and hands-on work in the following areas:
    • Windows operating system
    • Access database
    • HTML (web pages)
    • Visual Basic
  • Various professional women in the discipline came to the camp to talk about their work and background.
  • The girls were be given ample time to enjoy the facilities at Saint Vincent and to simply relax and be in each other's company. Sceheduled events included opportunities to enjoy the summer theater as well as on-campus team-building exercises conducted by an outdoor adventure company.
  • Housing was in the campus dorms, with most meals in the cafeteria.
  • The camp was organized by the Computing and Information Science Department as part of its Link-to-Learn Grant Project.
  • Camp director: Colleen Carr, Assistant Professor.

Tuition


The cost of the mini-camp for 2002 was $109. This included all meals, snacks, instructional and activity fees, and a double occupancy room in the college residence halls.

Recreation


Camp participants had access to campus tennis courts, the game room, indoor swimming pool, and other facilities on campus.

Educational Facilities


Classes and demonstrations were conducted in the Computing and Information Science Department computer lab on Windows-based personal computers. All classes and demonstrations were taught by Saint Vincent College faculty or professional women working in the discipline.

During 2000 - 2002 this project was supported in part by funds from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Link-to-Learn Project.
