Computer Camp for Girls



The Summer 2001 Camp


Our first computer mini-camp for girls was held on June 17 - 19, 2001. Eighteen girls participated, which filled out computer lab. By all reports, a good time was had by all. Here are some comments from the participants:

Overview of 2001 Mini-Camp

  • Designed especially for girls entering grades 8 through 11
  • Sunday, June 17, 5:00 PM through Tuesday, June 19, 5:00 PM
  • Come join us and:
    • layout and create your own web page
    • learn about Visual BASIC programming
    • design and manipulate your own database using Microsoft ACCESS
    • listen to women computer professionals talk about their jobs and what it is like to work in the computer industry
  • Organized by the Computing and Information Science Department as part of its Link-to-Learn Grant Project.
  • Camp director: Colleen Carr, Assistant Professor.

Tuition


The cost of the camp is $99. This includes all meals, snacks, instructional and activity fees, and a double occupancy room in the college residence halls. Adult counselors will be assigned to small groups of girls and accompany them at all times.

Recreation


Camp participants will have access to campus tennis courts, the gameroom, indoor swimming pool, and other facilities on campus. To give participants a break from classroom activities, initiative games will be played that teach problem solving and group interaction.

Educational Facilities


Classes and demonstrations will be conducted in the Computing and Information Science Department computer lab on Windows-based personal computers. All classes and demonstrations will be taught by Saint Vincent College faculty, local high school educators, or professional women working in the discipline.
