Current CIS Major Requirements
The CIS major requirements are listed separately below for the
Computer Science Concentration, the
Information Technology Concentration,
and the Bioinformatics Concentration.
These requirements apply to all CIS majors who entered on or after summer 2007.
The main change from the 2005 requirements for the major
is the addition of the bioinformatics concentration.
Computer Science (CS) Concentration
A minor in another field is recommended, especially in mathematics or physics.
A statistics course is recommended.
Logic is recommended as one of the courses chosen for the philosophy Core requirement.

- CS 170, Discrete Structures I
- CS 171, Discrete Structures II
- CS 221, Data Structures
- CS 230, Computer Architecture and Assembly Language
- CS 310, Programming Languages
- CS 330, Computer Architecture and Operating Systems
- CS 350, Database Concepts and Information Structures
- CS 355, Software Engineering
- CS 357, Computing Science Project I (in a CS area, 1 credit)
- CS 358, Computing Science Project II (in a CS area, 2 credits)

CIS Electives (12 credits)
Any CIS department courses numbered 200 or above may be included. One approved computer course from
another department may be included, subject to the approval of the CIS department chairperson.
CIS Mathematics Requirement
- MA 111, 112 - Calculus I and II or
- MA 109, 110 - Calculus I and II

Information Technology (IT) Concentration
A minor in another field is recommended, especially in business or economics.
A statistics course is recommended as are industry certifications.
Logic is recommended as one of the courses chosen for the philosophy Core requirement.

Additional Requirement
This concentration also requires 6 credits chosen from business and/or economics.
These credits can be included under the Core Curriculum social science requirement.
Bioinformatics (BIN) Concentration
A minor in another field is recommended, especially in biology or mathematics.
BL 260 (Biostatistics) is recommended. Logic is recommended as one of the courses
chosen for the philosophy Core requirement.

CIS Mathematics Requirement
- MA 111, 112 - Calculus I and II
- Do not take MA 109, 110 for the BIN concentration.

Required Natural Science Courses
- BL 150 and 152, General Biology I and II
- BL 151 and 153, General Biology I and II Laboratory
- These credits can be used to fulfill the Core Curriculum natural science requirement
and so add no additional credits here.
